Project Overview

Rhian and John approached SJ1 Renewables after identifying the potential to generate electricity from the river running through their farm. An initial desktop review followed by a detailed site visit confirmed that the site offered sufficient head and flow for a viable hydro scheme.

From there the project moved into detailed design, where the available resource, terrain and practical installation constraints were brought together into a workable and reliable system layout.

System Design

The system was engineered to make efficient use of the available head and flow while ensuring long-term reliability and environmental protection of the watercourse.

A stainless steel Coanda intake screen was selected to prevent debris and aquatic life entering the system while maintaining consistent flow. Water is conveyed via pipeline to the turbine house, where energy is extracted before being safely returned to the river.

Construction & Installation

The installation required coordination of civil works, mechanical installation and electrical integration. Careful attention was given to pipeline routing, intake construction and turbine installation to ensure the system performed as designed.

Each stage of the project was delivered with a focus on practical execution, ensuring that the system would operate reliably under real-world conditions.

Project Outcome

The completed scheme generates approximately 120,000 kWh of electricity per year, significantly reducing reliance on imported energy while also providing an additional income stream through export.

The installation delivers long-term environmental benefits, reducing carbon emissions and providing a robust, low-maintenance renewable energy solution for the farm.
